Project Overview

The Bourke Street, Melbourne (CBD) water main renewal is a proactive infrastructure upgrade that will ensure the local area has continued access to a safe and reliable water supply.

These works will be delivered by Interflow on behalf of Greater Western Water.

Construction will take place on the south side of Bourke Street, between Russell Street and Russell Place.

  • When will works take place?

Works during the day started on Monday 26 May 2025.

Night works are expected to start on Sunday 15 June 2025, and take about 3 weeks to complete.

    Working hours:

    • Day works between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Friday
    • Night works between 7pm and 5am, Sunday to Thursday.

  • How long will works take to complete?

Construction will take about 6 weeks.

We will then complete reinstatement within around 2 weeks of completing construction. All roads, driveways and footpaths will be restored at this time.

We will let you know as soon as possible if there are changes to our work timelines.

What to expect during our work

We'll make every effort to reduce the impact of our work where possible.
  • Changes to traffic conditions

There will be some changes to traffic conditions, road surfaces and driveways during our work.

Traffic controllers will help vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians safely navigate the area.

  • Businesses are still open!

Bourke Street is still open for business! We will be working closely with traders to make sure it's business as usual for locals and visitors, so you can continue accessing your favourite spots.

  • Construction noise and dust

There will be construction noise and dust from machinery and vehicles during working hours.

We will minimise noise and dust where possible.

  • Changes to parking

Construction will take place in some of the street parking bays on Bourke Street. We may also use some spaces for storage of materials and machinery at times.

Our site compounds will be located in parking bays in front of 225 Bourke Street for the length of the works.

  • Night works

Some night works are needed to reduce the project's disruption to peak-hour traffic, local businesses and commuters.

We will need to use lights and generators during night works.

Where possible, we will complete noisier activities early in the evening to reduce disruption.

  • Trams are still running

We will not be impacting the tram lines or stops on Bourke Street. Trams will continue running throughout our works.
