Project Overview
We're upgrading the sewer network in Darley to ensure reliable service and support urban growth in the area. The works will take place at the intersection of Grey Street, Fitzroy Street, and Gisborne Road, as well as along the northside bike lane on Grey Street, between Nelson Street and Gisborne Road.
The new sewer pipes will complement the existing network and help reduce the risk of spills during peak times.
During construction, we'll use a combination of open cut methods and, in some areas, directional drilling
These options will help us to reduce construction impacts such as noise, traffic disruption and dust, while keeping the sewer network operational throughout the project.
When will construction happen?
We have started early works to prepare the site for construction.
Works will commence in October 2024 between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday. Works will be carried out in two stages and will take approximately 16 weeks to complete.
- Daytime closure from 7am to 5pm:
- 19 November to 2 December: Grey Street will be closed during the day in both directions between Dundas Street and Fitzroy Street.
- Overnight closures from 5pm to 7am:
- 19 November to 26 November: The southern side of Grey Street will be closed between the CALTEX carpark exit and Fitzroy Street. During this time, the north side of Grey Street and the IGA carpark exit onto Grey Street will be open.
- 27 November to 2 December: The northern side of Grey Street will be closed between Dundas Street and Fitzroy Street. During this time, the southern side of Grey Street will be open.
- North side road closure
- 2 December to 18 December: The north side of Grey Street will be closed between Dundas Street and Nelson Street.
- Full road closure

- The bike lane on Grey Street will be closed during working hours.
- The north-side pedestrian path on Grey Street will be fully closed during the works.
What to expect during construction
Construction impacts may include:
- Some footpaths will be closed during construction, there will be signage to direct pedestrians safely through the work zone.
- A site office will be located on
Dundas Street near the Grey Street intersection.
- Crushed rock will be stored on private land at the eastern end of Grey Street throughout construction.
- We will notify you in advance if
weekend or night works are required.
- There will be construction noise and dust from machinery and construction vehicles during working hours.
- Your water and sewerage services will not be interrupted during these works.
- If we require access to your driveway as part of these works, we will contact you directly prior to any disruptions.

Changes to Traffic
Changes to traffic will include:
- Traffic changes will include detours to surrounding streets, reduced speed limits, and temporary on-street parking closures while Grey Street is closed.
- Traffic management will be in place to help vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists move safely through the area.
- You may notice increased
construction vehicles on the east end of Grey Street during construction.
