Project Overview

The Kerr Street water main renewal is an essential, proactive infrastructure upgrade that will support the needs of the local community.

The project will install 1.6 kilometres of new water main along Kerr Street, extending from Nicholson Street along to George Street. The project will also include the renewal of water mains on parts of the following streets:
  • Henry
  • Argyle
  • Young
  • Fitzroy and
  • Napier

The new pipe will replace the existing water mains which were built in the 1920s and are reaching the end of their operational life.

These works will be delivered by Downer Group on our behalf.

We are committed to working with you to keep construction impacts to a minimum and will keep you updated with our progress.

  • A note about parking in the area

We have been in communication with the City of Yarra to discuss residents’ concerns about parking availability around our works. While we can’t minimise our parking impacts within work zones any further, our crews will make every effort to park private cars off local residential streets.

After a pause in works over the festive season, our crews will be back on site starting January 2023 to complete the second stage of works. These works will focus on local streets between Nicholson Street and Brunswick Street.

  • Works will be undertaken during the daytime, Monday to Friday, to minimise impacts on local residents.
  • There will be some impacts to local traffic conditions, including reduced car parking. As we work along each street in the area, we will use either partial or full lane closures to ensure that our crews can work safely. Traffic controllers will be on-site to ensure the safe flow of traffic in the area.
  • Once our crews have finished working each day, we will safely store materials and equipment. Returning roads and parking conditions back to regular use for local residents.

Starting in October, our crews will commence work on the eastern side of the project area, renewing the water mains along Kerr Street and parts of Argyle Street.

  • Working hours will be from Monday to Friday to minimise impacts to local residents.
  • There will be some impacts to local traffic conditions, including some reduced car parking. There will be partial lane closures in place, to ensure the safety of vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians in the area. Traffic controllers will be on site to ensure the safe flow of traffic in the area.
  • Once our crews have finished working each day, we will safely store materials and equipment and will return the roads and parking for use by local residents.
