Project Overview

GWW will be constructing approximately 7km of new water main from the Magnet Hill water tank in New Gisborne to Riddells Creek. As part of our broader Macedon Ranges Transfer Upgrade, this project is essential to ensure the ongoing quality and security of water supply in the Macedon Ranges region.

This project directly responds to what the community told us matters most:

  • Securing safe and reliable drinking water
  • Reducing reliance on unpredictable weather
  • Preparing our region for the future

We are currently in the detailed design phase of planning. Construction is expected to commence in late 2026 and be completed by early 2028.

  • Where does Macedon Ranges water come from?

Drinking water in Macedon Ranges comes from a mix of sources, including creeks, springs, reservoirs and bores. When needed, we may temporarily switch sources or transfer water from Rosslynne Reservoir or Melbourne’s supply. Transfers involve pumping drinking water into the raw water system for treatment at local plants, ensuring it always meets Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.

  • Why is the project needed?

A drying climate and population growth are increasing pressure on Victoria’s water supplies.

To maintain supply, more water has to be transferred from Rosslynne Reservoir and Melbourne’s network. However, limitations on existing pipes mean there is only so much water we can transfer and store. This project will fix those constraints, making it simpler and more reliable to bring in extra water when the community needs it most.

  • Project benefits

The new pipeline will secure a reliable and sustainable water supply for Macedon Ranges now and into the future. It will:

    • Strengthen the connection between local reservoirs and Melbourne’s network
    • Improve reliability and system efficiency
    • Reduce reliance on existing pump stations already at capacity
    • Lower energy use and greenhouse gas emissions
    • Build resilience against dry conditions, population growth and climate change

Where are we working?

The pipeline will run from Magnet Hill tank in New Gisborne, along Kilmore Road and Markham Road to Riddells Creek.

What to expect

No one knows the area like the people who live and work there. We’ll be working closely with local businesses, community groups and residents throughout the project to understand your needs, listen to your feedback and keep you informed.

Before and during construction, here’s what you can expect:

  • We’ll reach out to nearby businesses and community groups to understand how you use the area and how we can minimise disruption.
  • A combination of trenchless and open-cut construction methods will be used, with around 50–60% of the pipeline installed using trenchless techniques to reduce surface impacts and disruption.
  • Construction activity may include temporary noise, dust, and vibration while work is underway.
  • Traffic and access changes will be needed at times, we’ll provide advance notice and maintain access wherever possible.
  • Equipment and materials will be stored safely and managed to keep work areas tidy and secure.
  • We’ll stay in touch through regular updates, signage and notifications to keep you informed about progress and upcoming works.
  • We’ll look for opportunities to create lasting community benefits once the project is complete, such as restoring local spaces or supporting community initiatives.
