The Market Street, Melbourne water main renewal is a proactive infrastructure upgrade that will support the essential service needs of the local community into the future.

This water main services residents and local business in the Melbourne central business district.

These works will be delivered by Interflow on our behalf and will be done at night to reduce our impact on trams, buses, commuters and local businesses.

  • When will works take place?

Works will take place at night from Sunday to Thursday, between 7pm and 5am.

We will be working at night to reduce our impact on peak-hour traffic, tram and bus routes.

Project Updates

Works are progressing well to renew the existing water main in Market Street (between Flinders Lane and Flinders Street) with majority of the construction completed before the end of 2023.

Due to complex underground conditions we will be returning in early January 2024 to finish off the final stages of works.

What will this included?

  • You will see our crews back on site from Monday 8 January 2024 to finish installing two sections of the new water main at each end of the work zone
    • This includes the intersection at Market Street and Flinders Street and the intersection at Market Street and Flinders Lane.
  • We will also finish connecting two new service connections within Market Street.
  • These remaining works should be completed by the end of February 2024.
  • Permanent reinstatements of impacted roads and paths will follow these watermain renewal works.

Work along Market Street will now start on Sunday 19 November.

What do you need to know?

  • Due to unforeseen circumstances we've had to delay the start of works by one week.
  • Works will continue to take place at night from Sunday to Thursday, between 7pm and 5am.
  • There will be no planned interruptions to your water.
  • We will notify residents and surrounding businesses as soon as possible if there will be any further changes to the project schedule.

What do the works involve?

The project will install 103 metres of new water main along the eastern side of Market Street, Melbourne between Flinders Lane and Flinders Street.

The new pipe will replace the existing water main which was built in the last century and is reaching the end of its operational life.

We need to upgrade the main to make sure we can continue to deliver a safe and reliable water service to people living and working in the area.

What should I expect?

  • Construction noise and dust

There will be construction noise and dust from machinery and construction vehicles during working hours. Crews will do the noisiest works earlier in the shift wherever possible.

  • Changes to traffic conditions

Changes to traffic conditions will include partial lane closures, reduced speed and impacts to parking. Traffic control will be on site to help vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians safely navigate the area.

  • Temporary bus stop relocations

The bus stop for routes 234 and 236 at Market Street/Meal Place will be temporarily relocated for part of these works. The temporary bus stop will be on Market Street, close to the current location.

There will be dedicated traffic control onsite to assist the public with access to the bus at any time during our works.
