Project overview
We’re building approximately 750 metres of new sewer pipes under Melbourne’s CBD and Docklands, to double the capacity of the sewer. The new pipeline will be installed under Flinders Lane, Spencer Street, Siddeley Street and Wurundjeri Way.
This project will be delivered by Aqua Metro for Greater Western Water.
We’re committed to letting local communities know about our works. If you live in the area, we’ll send you a letter with more information before we start construction. As the project continues, we’ll keep you updated.
Project update
This is a notice under section 175 of the Water Act 1989 (Vic).
Due to population growth Greater Western Water intends to build a new sewer on Siddeley Street, Flinders Lane, Spencer Street and Wurundjeri way to improve the network and ensure reliable sewer services for the local community.
Construction activities would affect residents and businesses on Flinders Lane, Spencer Street, Flinders Street, Siddeley Street and Wurundjeri Way.

Submissions must be received no later than close of business Friday 19 December 2025.
If no submissions are received, Greater Western Water intends to carry out the construction works from Monday 6 January 2026.

Construction of the new sewer
Major construction on the new sewer is expected to start in early 2026. If you live near our works, we will update you and provide more specific details before our construction starts.

Current and upcoming works
We are currently completing works to prepare for construction of the new sewer.
Relocating other underground utilities
Before we start construction on the new sewer, we need to move some other underground utilities. This work will be at multiple locations starting from late October 2025.

Other GWW works
To prepare for this project, GWW is completing some essential maintenance on the existing sewer. This work is being carried out by our Delivery Partner Rangedale.
The locations of our maintenance work is shown below, with more information about expected impacts at each site. You may also see our workers accessing the sewer via maintenance holes at various locations along Flinders Street.
