Project overview

We’re building approximately 750 metres of new sewer pipes under Melbourne’s CBD and Docklands, to double the capacity of the sewer. The new pipeline will be installed under Flinders Lane, Spencer Street, Siddeley Street and Wurundjeri Way.

This project will be delivered by Aqua Metro for Greater Western Water.

We’re committed to letting local communities know about our works. If you live in the area, we’ll send you a letter with more information before we start construction. As the project continues, we’ll keep you updated.

Current and upcoming works

We are currently completing works to prepare for construction of the new sewer.

Relocating other underground utilities

Before we start construction on the new sewer, we need to move some other underground utilities. This work will be at multiple locations starting from late October 2025.

Other GWW works

To prepare for this project, GWW is completing some essential maintenance on the existing sewer. This work is being carried out by our Delivery Partner Rangedale.

  • Construction of the new sewer

Major construction on the new sewer is expected to start in early 2026.

    Location of sewer construction

The line on the map below shows where we will install the underground sewer pipe. The pins show the location of our construction sites.

What to expect during sewer construction

We’ll do our best to minimise disruption in the area. If you live, work or visit the area, here's what you can expect.

    • Businesses are still open

We will be working closely with traders to make sure it's business as usual for locals and visitors, so you can continue accessing your favourite spots.

    • Changes to traffic conditions

There may be lane closures and detours. Traffic management will help pedestrians and road users continue to move safely around the area.

    • Construction noise

There will be noise from construction machinery and traffic. We will look at ways to reduce noise where we can.
    • Night works

Some night works are needed to reduce the project's disruption to traffic, businesses and commuters. We will complete noisier activities during the day or earlier in the evening where we can.
    • Storage

We will need to store equipment and construction materials in the area. There will also be some on-site facilities to support workers.

    • Temporary fencing

There will be temporary fencing and barriers around our worksites. This helps us keep the local area safe.
