Project Overview

The Somerville and Holmwood Roads, Tottenham water main renewal was an essential, proactive infrastructure upgrade that will support the needs of the local community now and into the future.

The project installed 1.2 kilometres of new water mains along Somerville and Holmwood Roads, Tottenham. The new pipe replaced the existing water mains which were built in the 1930s and reaching the end of their operational life.

This project is now complete. These works were delivered by Downer Group on our behalf.

Project Updates

We are pleased to advise that all of the new water main along Somerville Road has been installed and commissioned, with all property and fire services transferred and now fed from the new water main.

Our crews have reinstated the road surface along Somerville Road, returning the area to its previous condition prior to the water main renewal.

What works have taken place so far?

  • We have installed the final length of water main along Somerville Road.
  • We have commissioned the entire water main with all services transferred to the new water main.
  • We have resheeted and marked the entire length of one westbound lane along Somerville Road between Tottenham Parade and Alick Road.
  • We have removed our site compound at Holmwood Road.

Over the last 4 months, works have been paused on Somerville Road while we were in negotiations with other utility authorities about the crossing of the final underground asset with our water main.

Now that we have agreement on the installation, our crews returned to Somerville Road to complete the final installation on Sunday 27 May at night.

What can you expect in the coming weeks?

  • Works will be carried out at night from Sunday to Thursday, between 9pm and 5am.
  • We will be returning to lay the final length of water main near the intersection of Somerville Road and Alick Road, Tottenham.
  • We will need to transfer property services over to the new main once the remaining works are complete. We will be in contact with impacted customers in advance of the transfer.
  • A section of Somerville Road was resheeted in December 2023. The remaining section of roadway will be reinstated in June 2024 once the water main has been commissioned and all property services transferred.

After a much needed break our crews will restart work in 2024 on the week starting Monday 22 January and will be continuing works at night.

As we approach the final stretch of the project, there will be a return to night works in order to deliver the works with minimal disruption to traffic and customers in the area.

These will include:

  • Road resheeting along Somerville Road between Victoria Drive and Tottenham Parade, commencing on the week starting the evening of Sunday 29 October until the morning of Friday 10 November. Works will be conducted Sunday to Thursday, 7pm to 5am.

We've had some project milestones over the last month including:

  • August 2023 - Night works were completed
  • Early October 2023 - The section of water main on Somerville Road between Tottenham Parade and Holmwood Road was commissioned, with all fire services and domestic service connections transferred to the new main

We now expect to complete Stage 2 of works in November 2023 with final reinstatement to follow in December. Unfortunately some previously undetected sections of hard rock have slowed our progress, but we thank you for your patience while we carry out this work.

We are currently working during the day and night to renew the water main along Somerville Road.

We began Stage 1 works on Holmwood Road in late February and over half of that section has now been completed.

Due to unforeseen circumstances we have paused works temporarily and will return to site around mid-May. We have made the road and footpaths safe for vehicle access. There will not be any ongoing impact to your water supply.

We will notify you with additional information ahead of works recommencing, including a new timeline for Stage 1 and 1a works.

Stage 1 works are in progress along Holmwood Road and are scheduled to be completed by April 2023. Traffic flow along Holmwood Road will be maintained at all times.

Once this work is complete we'll commission the new water main and transfer services to the new pipe.

Stage 1a of the project will start around mid April. We'll be doing some night works at major intersections along Somerville Road, Holmwood Road and Tottenham Parade.

Customers in the area will be notified in early April ahead of these works.

Works will begin during the week of 30 January 2023, and will take around 20 to 25 weeks to complete.

The project will be carried out in two stages:

Stage 1: We will be working along Holmwood Road for 6 to 9 weeks between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Stage 1a: We will be working at night at the intersection of Holmwood Road and Somerville Road for 1 to 2 weeks. These works are currently planned for delivery between 7pm and 5am and will be confirmed closer to the date.

Stage 2: The final stage of the project will see us working along Somerville Road between the Newport to Sunshine railway line and Tottenham Parade between 7am and 5pm for 10 to 13 weeks.

Further project update notices will be distributed to keep you informed over the course of the project.

We will return to the area to reinstate the roads and footpaths within 3 weeks of each stage’s completion. This work will take 3 to 4 days at each site.
